A city that grew north

Scottsdale incorporated on June 25, 1951 with about 2,000 residents and counted 241,361 in 2020. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is planned to cover 36,000 acres, nearly a third of the city's land.

Indian Bend Wash

After a major flood in 1972, the city pushed ahead with the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, finished in 1984: a 12-mile greenbelt of parks along the wash. It's a reminder that water management runs through Scottsdale's planning, down to the basins on individual lots.

Rules that apply

Questions and answers

Does Scottsdale protect native plants on private lots?

Yes. The Native Plant Ordinance applies citywide, and protected plants need a native plant permit to remove, relocate or destroy.
